A check engine light (CEL) coming on after installing LED bulbs is usually not because the engine is actually having a problem, but because the car’s electrical system detects something “unexpected” in the lighting circuit.

Some cars use pulse-width modulation (PWM) for dimming. LEDs may not behave correctly with it, causing:

5. Wrong circuit feedback (rare but possible)

In some vehicles, especially European models, lighting faults can be stored as diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that may trigger the CEL even though it’s not engine-related.

How to fix it

  • Use CAN-bus compatible LED bulbs
  • Install load resistors (simulate halogen load)
  • Use a proper decoder harness
  • Scan codes with an OBD2 reader to confirm which module is complaining
  • Clear codes after fixing
