Can I repair a device that got wet?

Short Answer: Yes — but only if you act immediately and do NOT turn it on before cleaning.

Detailed: Water doesn't kill electronics — short circuits and corrosion do. The moment you apply power to a wet board, electrolysis destroys traces and chips.

Correct water damage procedure:

  1. Immediately remove power (battery, unplug)

  2. Disassemble as much as possible

  3. Remove the main board and other PCBs

  4. Clean with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush (toothbrush works)

  5. Dry for 24–48 hours in front of a fan (not heat gun — too hot)

  6. Inspect for corrosion — white or green crusty deposits. Clean with alcohol and a fiberglass pen.

  7. Only then reassemble and test

What NOT to do: Rice is a myth. It doesn't dry internal components and leaves starch dust. Use silica gel or airflow instead.

Success rate:

  • Clean water, powered off immediately → 70–90%

  • Salt water or sugary liquid → 20–40% (requires ultrasonic cleaning)

  • Powered on while wet → <10%
