Why does my car alarm go off randomly at night?

Short Answer: A faulty hood/trunk/door switch, low battery voltage, or a sensitive shock sensor.

Detailed: Car alarms trigger from:

  • Door/hood/trunk pinswitches — rubber boots crack, letting moisture in

  • Shock sensors (too sensitive — adjustable with a screw)

  • Voltage drop — an old battery dipping below 11V can trigger low-voltage alarm

  • Interior motion sensor (ultrasonic or microwave) picking up a fly or moving air from HVAC

  • Aftermarket remote start conflicting with factory alarm

Diagnosis:

  • Check the dashboard for a "door open" icon — if it flickers, a pinswitch is bad

  • Disable the shock sensor (usually a small box under the dash with an adjustment dial)

  • Test battery voltage overnight — if below 12V, replace battery

  • Put the car in valet mode (if available) to disable the interior sensor
